What To Pack First When Moving

If you are getting ready to move into a new home, you will need to start packing somewhere. When it comes to packing, you will want to start packing with things that you don't use daily and then work your way to things you use more often.

Start With Items in Storage

First, you are going to want to start by packing up things that are already in storage. For example, if you have a hall closet where you store things you don't use that often, start packing it up. Or, if you have an attic or basement full of stuff you don't use regularly, pack those things up first. Things that are already stored away in closets, attics, and basements are not things you regularly use, which is why that is great to start packing there.

Out of Season Clothing

Second, you probably have clothing you don't regularly wear, such as out-of-season clothing. For example, you probably have jackets and sweaters that you will not wear in the summertime, or bathing suits, shorts, and tank tops you will not wear during the winter months. Pack up all the clothing out of season and that you have not worn in a while. Just keep out the clothing that you see yourself wearing over the next month or so until you move.

Decorations

Your decorations may enhance the visual appeal of your home, but they are not objects that you use regularly, making them something great to pack up early on. Your decorations are probably fragile, so packing them up earlier allows you time to carefully wrap and prepare them so that they don't get harmed during the moving process.

Collections

Finally, you are going to want to pack up any collections you have. Once again, these are not things you are regularly using, which is why you should pack them up early. For example, you can pack up your DVD collection or figurines or your collection of teacups. Pack up anything that you collect but don't need access to right away.

When it comes to getting ready to move, you will want to give yourself a few weeks to pack. Start by packing up items that are already stored out of the way in your home, then pack up out-of-season clothing, and move on to decorations and collections. Packing up all this stuff can take time and allow you to get a head start on the packing process. To learn more, contact a residential moving company.

Although most people assume that their possessions aren't worth much, the fact of the matter is that protecting valuable possessions should be a priority for you. I started thinking about different ways that we could store our valuable items about a year ago, and making a few changes really helped us to protect things. We stopped just chucking things into boxes and started focusing on wrapping, cushioning, and transporting the items carefully.
